Evaluating CPA exam review courses can be a daunting task. To help you make an informed decision, we suggest ten key questions to ask about any course.
1. What is its pass rate? Official overall pass rate data is published annually against which course providers may compare their pass rates. Is the pass rate for the course published? If not, what significance do you attach to the absence of published data?
2. What is the course's repeat policy? If it offers a guarantee, is it realistically obtainable? Are free course retakes provided? Free content updates?
3. Can you "test-drive", or even preview, the course before purchasing? Is it an actual copy of the course? Or just an animated presentation?
4. Who wrote the material? Does the provider disclose who authors their material? Are they full-time college professors? Do they actually teach a CPA Exam Review course?
5. Who's doing the teaching? Does the provider use full-time college professors to guide students through the material?
6. Does the course schedule and delivery mode fit your lifestyle? E.g. If you have heavy or unpredictable professional and/or family demands on your time or travel a lot, can a classroom course meet your needs?
7. Does the course design and delivery mode provide the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of learning styles and rates of learning, such that your particular needs are likely to be served by the course? Or does the course reflect a "one size fits all" concept?
8. Does the course require you to conform to fixed dates and times for you to study? If so, what if you must miss some of those dates/times?
9. How will the course familiarize you with the requirements of the computer-based CPA exam if it is not computer-based itself? If the course is computer-based, does it use Q&A formats and software functionality and simulations that are identical to those you will use in the actual CPA exam?
10. How extensive and understandable are the measures of your learning progress you will receive during the course? Is your progress reported to you in real time as you learn? Or is the feedback you get delayed by the instructor's need to score your answers first?
